Let Them Know

Let Them Know, is a small graphic novel based in the harsh tribulations and medical camps of the American Civil War. It is focused on the story of Mary Edwards Walker, a famously competent surgeon who tirelessly aided both sides of the warfront despite her gender and historically known to be the only woman ever to receive the Congressional Medal of Honor. To help properly represent the harsh realities of the Civil War and war, the illustrative style is gritty and brutal, using mostly pencil and dark ink to make the environment feel isolated.

Characters are drawn to be eerie and almost inhuman, reflecting how the horrific events they have seen have changed them. Although the graphic novel is dark in tone, it allowed me to explore new art styles and how to create a semi-historical narrative that helped push a strong, culturally relative message.
